Tenebrous Nostrums

ginandjack:

I realized that I never really asked this, and would love to hear people’s responses. Have any of you experienced scent or scents as the way in which you experience others (Gods, fae, eights, sundry spirits)? Is there a particular scent that you recognize as a visiting being? Is it a common occurrence for you? Has it always been pleasant, or have there been more negative interactions or experiences? Has a scent ever triggered an experience, or do certain scents make such things easier? Any relevant information would be greatly appreciated. It only now occurs to me that something that is very commonplace for me, is not usually discussed. So, let’s open discussion! The olfactory and the “woo”. What about you?

Yup.

Smells I think of when I deal with the woo: Rainwater, sandalwood, wind (more like the sensation of smells), floral scents riding the heat, sea salt, the ocean, blood, honey, sex, snow, beeswax, late summer-early fall nights.

Blood is super common smell for me to pick up. Rainwater when there is no rain is another super common one. Some of it is purely associative. The ocean, the floral scents, beeswax, and the hot decaying nights are all common because I associate them with my practice strongly.

Usually the spirits I deal with are accompanied by a myriad of smells. Some of them have smells so distinct I can tell who they are without even trying. Sometimes this leads to negative shit. There’s a spirit I deal with that smells like a marsh - putrid, acidic, muck-ridden, stomach-rolling.

As for smells triggering me, absolutely. I’m already sensitive to smells and lights dues to life-long migraines. But some smells will trigger me right into a vision (and I almost never can tell you what that trigger is). Sometimes it’s the combination of smells and noise or light but definitely.

Is this common? For me it’s common enough to be a thing but not common enough for it to be every times I deal with spirits.

I think there’s more I’d normally say but my brain melted from the heat today so… this is what you get for now.
